Reducing fire risk in high rise social housing, House of Commons debate, September 2021

We welcome the introduction of the Fire Safety Act and the Building Safety Bill and hope they will be an important step in the right direction. We are however concerned about some of the practicalities of the implementation of new fire safety legislation for both resident safety and local authorities.

LGA response to Fire Safety Consultation

The LGA believes that some form of statutory guidance will probably be necessary in order to avoid putting responsible persons in the impossible position of having legal duties to review fire risk assessments that they cannot fulfil as a result of a shortage of competent, insured assessors.

To ensure the legislation is successful in protecting lives, national government must ensure that local government is reimbursed for any additional costs arising out of the operational changes mandated by this Bill.

LGA response to consultation on sprinklers and other fire safety measures in new high-rise blocks of flats

We have followed the consultation in referring to sprinklers. However guidance and standards need to allow for the development of other automatic fire suppression system technologies.
